This is Not a Poem

The sun was playing hide and seek
on the rolling white caps
The shore birds were darting from person to person
in search of their next meal
The reeds and sea grass blew from the dunes
and collected with the shells in a delicious crunching under the feet

I should be sitting in the sand
enjoying a peaceful moment
Instead I am running
straight toward the water

The waves are slamming me back to shore
As if the secret to life was buried in their depths
and I, an unknown intruder, was trying to take
what did not belong to me

Over and over again I rise
Over and over again they reply

And I know there is a lesson to be learned here
about obstacles and life
or a poem I am meant to be writing
But the only words that form in my mouth are a prayer:

I am grateful
I AM grateful
I am GRATEFUL

ABOUT THE POET ~
I am a new poet and consider myself an ordinary person who sees the world in extraordinary ways. My poetry strives to make sense of the senseless and cruel in the world and point out some of the failings of society. I love to write about social, political and environmental issues and try to shine a light on the dark places that most people try to ignore.
