A Mother's Poem

For your kind and smiling eyes
which hauntingly look like mine

For the way you say, "Where" with excitement
whenever we see a cat

For your childish playfulness
even though you are no longer a child

For your soft steps
in this hard world

For the way you love small and insignificant creatures
animals and humans alike

For your wonder at the universe
and your place in it

For the times you have been brave
and faced the monsters under your bed and life

For the truthfulness of your words
when a lie would have been easier

For the way you let me make your plate
just so I could feel like your mother again

For the times you taught this selfish heart
to be loving

For the brief brush with the divine at your birth
and the million more miracles you have wrought in my life

I thank you

And though the ever-mounting mortal desire
is to hold you in my arms forever
Letting go is what is required to live in this world

ABOUT THE POET ~
I am a new poet and consider myself an ordinary person who sees the world in extraordinary ways. My poetry strives to make sense of the senseless and cruel in the world and point out some of the failings of society. I love to write about social, political and environmental issues and try to shine a light on the dark places that most people try to ignore.
