Shadows

by Drora Matlofsky

Dusk.
The world turns black and white
Grey
Dark grey
Black.

Shadows have overtaken the world.
Here is the dominion of Mr Hyde.

I loved you during the day,
Hide-and-seek shadow.
We played.
I didn't let people walk on you.

For what am I without you?
A bland Dr Jekyll.

But shadows in candlelight
Loom, ready to pounce.
Wild shadows around the bonfire,
Did I hear you howl?

All has gone dark.

When all the world's shadows
Encircle me,
Blind me,
What do I miss most?
My own shadow?
Or my boring,
Reassuring
Jekyllness?
