About John Kearsley Mitchell
John Kearsley Mitchell was an american poet, doctor and writer, born in Shepherdstown, Virginia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1819. Prior to setting up his practice in Philadelphia, he made three trips to the Far East as a surgeon on board. In 1826 he became professor of medicine and physiology at the Institute of Medicine at Philadelphia and in 1833 professor of chemistry at the Franklin Institute. From 1841 to 1858 he taught the theory and practice of medicine at Jefferson Medical College. He was also the father of the physician and writer Silas Weir Mitchell (February 15, 1829 - January 4, 1914).Browse all poems and texts published on John Kearsley Mitchell
