About Eliseus Williams
Eliseus Williams (2 May 1867 – 13 October 1926), better known by his bardic name Eifion Wyn, was a Welsh language poet, born at Porthmadog in Caernarfonshire, Wales. The primary school in the town of Porthmadog where he lived is named after him. His best known volumes are Telynegion Maes a Môr (1906) and Caniadau'r Allt (1927), the latter of which was published posthumously. He has been described as a Romantic poet, and as the primary lyric poet of his time. He wrote about love, the beauty of the natural world, as well as poems about the sea and seafarers - for he was descended from a seafaring family and lived in a small Welsh port; and there were also patriotic poems about Wales of a rather sentimental nature - very much a feature of the time. The language and imagery he used was common to ordinary people, which meant his work had a wide audience. As a result, his published work sold in thousands rather than in hundreds. But, in spite of the linguistic simplicity, he showed an absolute mastery of the often complex and difficult poetic forms that characterise Welsh poetry; and he dsiplays a great technical range in his work.Browse all poems and texts published on Eliseus Williams
