About Carol Ann Duffy
Carol Ann Duffy (born December 23, 1955 in Glasgow) is a Scottish contemporary poet and scholar. She is Professor of Contemporary Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University, and was named UK Poet Laureate in May 2009, succeeding Andrew Motion. She is not only the first woman but also the first to have openly declared her homosexuality to take up this position since its creation three centuries ago.Among her collections are Standing Female Nude (1985), awarded the Scottish Arts Council Award; Selling Manhattan (1987) which won a Somerset Maugham Award; Mean Time (1993), winner of the Whitbread Poetry Award and Rapture (2005), winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize. Her poems are interrogations on issues such as oppression, sexuality and violence. Her writings in an accessible language, made them very popular in schools.
