This Evening…

Atul Chandra Sarkar

This evening as the sun goes down
And darkness spreads from east to west,
I think of those pleasant days,
When amongst friends, you were best.
But just see how time changes,
And we cease to be what we are,
I remember the day when we were parting,
How my heart sank like the morning star.
Since then till date, I have thought,
What brought us so, so very near,
You were like many, many others,
Yet why you alone looked so dear?
Why have I longed for your company?
Why your presence provided solace?
I had so many well-wishers, yet
Why I thirsted for a glimpse of your face?
Our love too had a glorious dawn,
A day of which every moment was beautiful,
A quiet noon of making love,
An evening of hues most wonderful!
Unlike this evening that injects poison,
The venom of loneliness in every vein,
As I watch the sun go down,
Leaving behind an expansive, black stain.
