Recoil

by Jerry Buckley

To rewind
Reconstruct
The scene of the crime
Make a pass at empathy
Seek forgiveness

To set aside
One’s pride
To be first to blink
Account as if null and void
Past indignities

The voice inside
Rears its head
Inclines toward resolution
But we shrink back
And recoil into our
Comfortable seclusion
