by Mais Amad
Oh my mother tongue,
Your rich dialect is the child of Semitic and Aramaic languages.
Your “ha, hou, hi” has given birth to the most beautiful poetry of fallen civilizations.
Your words shatter realities,
Your existence illuminates life,
Your meaning deepens the soul.
Your vernacular declaration
Untangles political suppression,
Satisfies spiritual thirst,
Gives shade to the broken,
Entrusts a voice to our refugee brothers and sisters.
Oh my mother tongue, your existence in my life has been colonized by the imperialist.
Born with an Arabic tongue but raised to only understand in the English language.
