Mines, Explosions

by Josephine Miles

Josephine Miles

Mines, explosions, and collisions
Conducted themselves with expedition
Over the globe, in the still water,
At the sandy banks, in the coral shoals,
At the lime cliff, in the bath-capped surf
Achieved existence and an actual fame.
How did they manage? What is success?

Mines, explosions, and collisions
Had their pictures in the evening editions
Over the globe, on the glassy bottoms,
In the turfy seas, in the peaty channels
Made their way, though some of their men were rescued.
Made their way with ardor and impression.
Who were their associates? What is success?

Mines, explosions, and collisions
Must have some friends and multiple connections,
Candid contacts, pride, and personal honors.
I never knew any, I never was
Traveled on those shores and bathing seas, I wonder
Who so traveled, who aided and who knew them,
Who were their friends? What is success?
