by Jeffrey T. Bender
For freedom she awoke
And for freedom she broke
Her spell of silence, and spoke.
And when freedom never came,
She wiped her tears and rose again.
Many times she almost broke,
but stood her ground and never choked.
Man's crushing laws merely stoked,
The fires of liberty within her throat.
She bore a message that was pure and true
Out of her lips the words flew
Words of fresh beginnings, of starting anew.
They tried to quiet her down
But she hadn't made a sound
In far too long now.
For freedom she awoke
And for freedom she broke
Her spell of silence, and spoke.
