A Knock at Midnight

by Jay Parini

Jay Parini

There must be some error.
Are you sure you have the right address?

I'm not the one you really wanted.
He's probably the one who lives next door,
the one without a door.

In any case I'm younger than you'd think.
Ive got young children
and a lovely wife, and she's young, too.

I'm not the man for this great mission.
I detest long journeys.
T have fear of heights and snakes and flying.
And I'm so allergic: everything
is bad for my digestion.

And I don't like corridors or caves.
In open spaces, I am agoraphobic.
Truly, I have not been feeling well.

My heart beats crazily, and wakes my neighbors.
Heroism doesn't ring my bell.

Please, listen to my words!
What do you want with me at this late hour?
