Firebird Man

by Fred Decker, Gary Johnson, & Randy Green

I’m just drinking beer on a Sunday afternoon
With my brother Doug, it’s the 23rd of June
We’re talking ‘bout re-building a car we used to have,
A ’68 Firebird that’s down at Mom and Dad’s
I’m all revved up, I’m gonna be a Firebird Man!

We’re working on the ‘Bird, it’s a late October night
Doug knows what we’re doing, I know how to hold the light
We ripped out the engine, tore it all apart,
Put it back together, now we’ll see if she will start
I’m all revved up, I’m gonna be a Firebird Man!

Now it’s June again and the Firebird is done
I’m sipping on a beer, the ‘Bird is gleaming in the sun
Doug won’t let me drive, ‘cause I never slow down
But now I’ve got the keys and Doug is not around
I’m all revved up, I’m gonna be a Firebird Man!

Now I’m in the hospital, the Firebird’s a wreck
Doug wants to kill me, I’ve got a broken neck
An I. V. is dripping drugs to kill my pain
I slip into a dream as it floats across my brain…

I’m driving through the sky
The wind in my face
The clouds zooming by
I always knew this baby could fly!
I’m a Firebird Man!
I’m a Firebird Man!
