by Diane Fahey
Outside his collapsing kingdom,
the king's enemies topple his men —
pieces on a bloody chessboard.
In the forest, the prince summons
the wild man — who conjures soldiers
on fiery steeds; they turn the tide.
Their youthful general — back in
his first disguise, and playing dumb —
clipclops home on his spindly nag.
