Give me the mic and I bet I can belt
out a tune with the intensity of Al Green;
give me the torments of Marvin Gaye,
and the accompanying trappings
of despairs
and I’ll swoon a song worthy of Grammys;
all I need is the right shoes
and I’ll tap dance into the streets
like little Gregory Hines’ and
Sammy Davis and gyrate like the
King of Pop, and The Prince-of Purple
Badness;
the music like a tuning fork to my core,
dancing into my tapping feet.
Give me the laments of my Brothas
and Sistas
and I’ll sing ‘Soon it will be done,
the troubles of this world…’ over!
as sweet, and heavenly
as Mahalia J!
